Chapter at Photonics Ireland 2018!

What a fantastic conference Photonics Ireland 2018 was!

Hosted at the wonderful Páirc Uí Chaoimh, the Chapter’s Media and Outreach Officer, Akhil Kallepalli attended Photonics Ireland 2018. The conference presented the students and researchers with a platform to share their fantastic research with their peers, allowing for fantastic discussions! The presence of key industrial partners was also very helpful for the students to understand the latest in technology available. The faculty present benefitted from this as well.

The Chapter was proud to sponsor the Biophotonics Session and Akhil chaired the Optical Sensing and Spectroscopy Session on Day 3.

Photonics Ireland 2018

We are extremely proud to announce our association with Photonics Ireland conference!

The biennial Photonics Ireland conference series is the premier event for photonics research in Ireland, running since 2007. The break with the traditional biennial format is to avoid clashing with ECOC2019, which will be held in Dublin in 2019. The Photonics Ireland 2018 conference is co-organised by Cork Institute of Technology and Maynooth University, with co-chairs:

Dr. William Whelan-Curtin (Liam O’Faolain) (Centre for Advanced Photonics & Process Analysis, CIT)
Dr. Bryan Hennelly (Biomedical Engineering Group, NUIM)

The three plenary speakers have been confirmed. They are:

Prof. Malte Gather (University of St Andrews UK)
Prof. Miles Padgett (University of Glasgow, UK)
Dr. Joost van Kerkhof (LioniX International, NL)

Chapter Announcement (UK&I PHO36)

IEEE UK and Ireland Section set up the Photonics Chapter (a sub-Chapter of the IEEE Photonics Society)

The Photonics community of the UK and Ireland region stands on the verge of a very important geopolitical event. As the region prepares to leave the European Union after almost half a century, the need to promote technological advancement and cooperation between research, industry and academia is greater than ever before. The domain of photonics and optics is an emerging technology field with crucial advancements and milestones to achieve in the near and distant future.

Identifying this need, the IEEE UK and Ireland Section set out to establish a dedicated Photonics Chapter for the region. As a sub-Chapter of the IEEE Photonics Society, the Chapter was established after careful consideration and is led by Dr Richard Pitwon. The committee members bring together a unique balance of experience and enthusiasm from academia, industry pioneers and entrepreneurs.

Together, we have set out to establish UK and Ireland’s dedicated Photonics community. To achieve our mission for the photonics community of the region, we are participating in multiple conferences, assisting with technical committees for meetings and conferences of the region and organising a unique annual conference to bring together academia and industry under one roof – IEEE British and Irish Conference on Optics and Photonics, nicknamed the Christmas Lights Conference.
