Available Positions

Note: Everyone is welcome to apply. If you are not already, we request that you join the IEEE Photonics Society after a successful application and appointment to the role.

The currently available positions in the IEEE UK and Ireland Photonics Chapter include management of social media and coordination of events. While your primary role remains that for which you apply to, your role also includes participation in committee meetings and your vote will count as we make all our Chapter-related decisions. We also welcome any initiatives that you would like to champion through your Committee membership and support you as best as we can!

Feel free to apply for both positions; however, we are looking to welcome 2 individuals to the Committee!

Media and Public Relations Officer/Committee Member

The person we see best fitting this role would be positive, optimistic, outgoing, collaborative, knowledgeable of social media platforms with good networking skills. As social media will be our opportunity to share everything we do as a Chapter, we view this position as an integral part of all our activities.

Duties span across, but are not limited to,

  • Social media management (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn).
  • Advertise the activities of the Chapter.
  • Liaise with the webmaster for ensuring up-to-date information across all digital platforms.
  • Keen interest to interact with the community across platforms. Respond to inquiries or forward them to relevant Committee Officers when organising events, talks, outreach, etc.
  • Bring together different groups by finding opportunities from community posts.
  • Liaise with IEEE Photonics Society personnel for coordinated management of social media activity.

Conferences and Meetings Coordinator/Committee Member

We are currently hosting a series of webinars (Horizons of Optical, Photonics and Emerging Sciences (HOPES)) and a conference (British and Irish Conference on Optics and Photonics (BICOP)) in an annual cycle. The role will involve managing these events once speakers have confirmed their participation (as an example).

The person we see best fitting this role would be positive, optimistic, outgoing, collaborative and have good networking skills.

Duties span across, but are not limited to,

  • Liaise with all committee members, especially with the Media and Public Relations Officer, for timely social media posts and advertisement of events.
  • Coordination of website, schedules, registration forms, online platforms and EventBrite tickets for events (logistics).
  • Coordination with speakers at events; managing calendars, Doodle Polls, etc.
  • Awareness of the events to ensure no calendar clashes with major events in the wider optics and photonics community.
  • Experience (or keen to) in bringing event sponsorships.

Note: Everyone is welcome to apply. If you are not already, we request that you join the IEEE Photonics Society after a successful application and appointment to the role.
